The primary check-in and registration time will be on Monday May 11, 2009 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at the Asilomar Front Desk. If you are staying overnight at Asilomar, check-in for the Conference and Asilomar will be combined. If you are not staying at Asilomar, you will still need to check-in for the Conference during these times at Asilomar.

The registration area is located at the Asilomar Front Desk Building. You can park temporarily next to the Registration area. After you are registered, please park your car either near your overnight room or into a non-temporary space (if you are not staying overnight at Asilomar, but will be there for the first evening).

Arriving late on May 11th:

If you will arrive after the Conference check-in hours on May 11 and you are staying at Asilomar, you can check into your room by going to the Asilomar Front Desk. The front desk is open 24-hours a day so you can get into your overnight rooms without delay any time.

NOTE: Asilomar Guests need to checkout by noon on May 13, 2009.


WIRELESS Internet access is available FREE of charge 24 hrs a day in the Phoebe Hearst Social Hall (The building where the Front Desk is located)

If you are staying overnight at Asilomar please note that the overnight rooms do not have telephones or telephone lines so modem access will not be available.

Monterey and surrounding regions have a year-round temperate climate. Daytime highs are usually in the upper 60s (degrees F). Morning and evening temperatures can be quite a bit cooler than midday temperatures, so layered clothing is advised. Rain is unlikely, but fog is common. Casual dress and comfortable walking shoes are appropriate for the Conference.

* Rocky Shore Adventure:
The rocks are alive! Come on a walk along Asilomar's rocky shores and sandy beaches. State Park staff will share some innovative ways life has adapted to survive.

* Architecture/ History:
Find out more about the early days of Asilomar. Stroll through the historic buildings and grounds as State Park staff share stories of the area.

* Dune Experience:
Meander among the wildness. Come experience the Natural Dunes Preserve and see natives thrive. State Park staff will share natural and cultural stories of the dune system.

* Encounter Asilomar:
Too many exciting programs - Join State Park staff on a mix and mingle of each. Staff will share tidbits of the history, architecture, forest ecology, and dune ecosystem as we roam the park.

* Evening Programs:
Stories among the twilight. Join State Park staff as they share natural and cultural narratives.

* NOTE: THERE ARE NO PHONES OR TVs IN THE OVERNIGHT ROOMS.

* Phone-card Internet access is available in the Asilomar Front Desk building.

* Public telephones are available for use in the Asilomar Front Desk building & other locations (see Asilomar Grounds map).

* The Asilomar Front Desk is open 24-hours a day.

* Beverages, toiletries and gifts can be purchased at the Asilomar Park Store, open daily from 6:30 am - 9:00 pm.

* Fax and telephone messages will be delivered regularly to guests rooms (for those staying overnight at Asilomar). Fax service is available for a nominal fee at the front desk.

* Safe Deposit Box available for guests' use at front desk

* Parking for all guests residing at Asilomar is provided on the grounds. You may also park on grounds when you come for the Conference each day even if you are not staying overnight at Asilomar. Guests are asked to park in designated areas only. Disabled parking is available. Please note one-way drives and speeds limits on the grounds of 15 mph. No recreational vehicles are permitted. There are 10-minute parking zones available for registration or pickup of fellow conference guests residing at different lodges.

* Jitney service on the grounds available for guests to transport luggage or persons from the Administration Bldg to lodges, or to travel between lodges, dining hall, or meeting areas.

If you are staying overnight at Asilomar your lodging costs included all meal costs. Meals are served at Crocker Dining Hall where groups are seated together at designated tables. Daily dining room times are as follows:

Unfortunately, there is no refund for meals not eaten at Asilomar, and no food is permitted in the overnight rooms except in cases of illness.

Asilomar is located on the Monterey Peninsula in Northern California. Asilomar is about 2 1/2 hours south of San Francisco and about 1 hour west of San Jose.

Depending on where you are coming from, there are many different options to get to Asilomar, including flying, driving, trains and buses.

Monterey Peninsula Airport is the closest airport to Asilomar; the Monterey Peninsula DART provides transportation to Asilomar (1-866-663-DART).

It may be more cost effective to fly into San Jose International Airport and either rent a car or take the Monterey-Salinas Airporter (831-373-7777, http://www.montereyairbus.com) or Early Bird Shuttle (831-462-3933, http://www.earlybirdairportshuttle.com). These shuttles also serve the San Francisco Airport.

Driving: Directions

From San Francisco Bay Area or San Jose: Asilomar is approximately 120 miles south of downtown San Francisco (about 105 miles from San Francisco International Airport) and about 75 miles south of San Jose. Take 101 South to 156 West. Take 156 West to highway 1 South, through Monterey to the Pebble Beach / Pacific Grove exit, turn right on Holman highway / 68 West. Stay on Highway 68 West/Holman Highway for 3.5 miles until it becomes a city street called Forest Avenue. Continue on Forest Avenue for about 1 mile and make a left turn onto Sinex Avenue. In just under 1 mile, Sinex Avenue ends right at the front gates to Asilomar.

From Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, or San Luis Obispo: Asilomar is approximately 325 miles from downtown Los Angeles (about 310 miles from LAX). Take 101 North though Salinas to 156 West. Take 156 West to highway 1 South, through Monterey to the Pebble Beach / Pacific Grove exit, and highway 68 West. For about 3-1/2 miles you will then be on a portion of Highway 68 West that is also called the Holman Highway. Stay on Highway 68 West/Holman Highway until it becomes a city street called Forest Avenue. Continue on Forest Avenue for about 1 mile and make a left turn onto Sinex Avenue. In just under 1 mile, Sinex Avenue ends right at the front gates to Asilomar.

Trains

The AMTRAK train stops in Salinas. The local bus system (Monterey-Salinas Transit, MST) will transport you to Asilomar, or taxis are available.

If you do not want to ride a bus from the AMTRAK station, you will need to rent a car to get to Asilomar from Salinas.

Buses

The Greyhound Bus stops in Salinas. The local bus system (Monteray Salinas Transport MST) will transport travelers to Asilomar, or taxis are available. www.greyhound.com

The Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) bus system stops at the Monterey airport. The buses are clean and wheelchair accessible. The fare to Asilomar is $1.75 one way, and the total trip is about 30 minutes. Take any number Monterey-bound bus. Ask for a transfer when you board.

Transfers are free. Tell the driver to announce the Monterey Transit Center, which is where you will disembark and transfer to the #1 Asilomar bus. There is rarely more than a 5-minute wait at the transfer point. The #1 bus will let you off at the front gate to the Asilomar Conference Grounds. MST buses also have room for two bicycles per bus.
